May 2018 Block Lotto - MQG Side Stripe

One of the perks that come with a  Calgary MQG membership, is a membership to The Modern Quilt Guild. The MQG offers a monthly Block study/BOM for its membership

For this months lotto, we have chosen the Block Study from February 2018. You will need to be signed into The MQG site to access the pattern.
The  Block is Side Stripe by Renee Tallman, a member of the South Bay Area MQG. It's a half-square triangle block — with a twist! It features a fun stripe in the middle, making for a fun effect.

We have chosen to use solids only.   Medium to dark cool colours paired with White for the background.

Social Media tags   Couldn't find one for this block, so let's start one. #mqgsidestripe  as well as the usual ones. @calgarymqg and #calmgqblocklotto

General Rules:

1. Make one quilt block (or more) following the pattern and color scheme outlined in the monthly post.  For every block you make and bring to that month’s meeting, you will get one entry in the lotto.  If you are unable to attend the meeting, but really want to participate in the lotto, comment on this post or contact Philippa and we’ll try to work it out. Remember, you must be a member of CALMQG to participate.
2. The winner gets ALL THE BLOCKS to make a quilted project from them (guild reserves the right to vote on splitting up the blocks between more than one winner if there are enough entries).  If you win, the blocks become yours and you can use them in any way you choose.
3. We would like to see your finished project, either in person or pictures, within a year of winning the blocks.  You may continue to participate in and win subsequent block lottos during that time (at least for now…we may elect that you can not win again until you've shown your finished project).  After the year is up, you cannot participate or win again until the original project is finished.
4. Use modern fabrics that you like or love! If you are unsure about your fabric selection as it relates to 'Modern', just ask.
5. Have fun!  Keep in mind that (most likely) someone else will be taking home your block to incorporate into a larger piece and things must fit together (literally, …so keeping your block true to size is probably the most important thing), but you should also make it yours and enjoy the process!
Share with the tags @calgarymqg #calmqgblocklotto #calgarymqg on IG or on the Calgary Modern Quilt Guild Facebook Group. If you would like help with either of those, contact your guild's Social Media Coordinator: Tamara Kerelchuk @ninjadesigns or @calgarymqg
Have fun!

May Meeting

Our May meeting will be at Wonderfil Threaducation Centre Bay 4, 2915 19th St. NE from 7 – 9 pm on Thursday May 17th 2018.

The focus of May meeting is Advice Night! Bring a quilt you need advice on quilting or finishing, a pattern you need advice on colors, or any other quandary that would benefit the collective knowledge of the guild. We may split into smaller groups depending on the number of attendees and questions.

If you've entered your quilt into the Heritage Park Festival of Quilts in our group Libs Elliott pattern group entry then make sure you bring your entry to this meeting and give it to Agnes. The Heritage Park Festival of Quilts is on May 26th and 27th, look for our booth there and come say hi!

There will be no sew day in May. The next sew day is scheduled for June - Learn How to Sew Curves! Mary will be focusing on the free pattern Terrace by Violet Craft - 39 opportunities to practice your curves!  It's only two colors so you have plenty of time to get your materials together and come sew with us! Of course you can bring any curvy project that you are working on - consider trying out  December 2017 MQG quilt of the month or November 2016 MQG block of the month. Maybe a Pickle Dish or a Double Wedding Ring?  Or for a few less curves there is Adore-la, Mythical Lanterns (Valori Wells), and Mod Dots

Coming up (and subject to change):
  • June 21st - Skills Night: how to bind your quilt (Hawkwood)
  • June 23rd - Sew Day: Learn to Sew Curves with Jera now with more Mary! (Hawkwood)
  • July 19th - Summer Social  (Edworthy Park Picnic site #9) (A-J names bring food to share)
  • August 16th - Vanecea from Alberta Batting Co (Wonderfil)
  • September 20th - Kerry Foster of PennyDog with her new publication on Animal Applique (Wonderfil)
  • September 22nd - QuiltCon 2019 Charity Quilt construction (Wonderfil)
  • October 18th -  Krista Hennebury from Poppyprint trunk show - free for members (Hawkwood)
  • October 19th - Square Peg Round Hole workshop with Krista Hennebury from Poppyprint (Hawkwood)
  • October 20th - Speed Dating improv workshop with Krista Hennebury from Poppyprint (Hawkwood)
  • November 15th - meeting subject TBA (Wonderfil)
  • November 17th - sew day with Kerry Foster on Animal Applique (Wonderfil)
  • December 13th - Winter Social (Wonderfil) (K-Z names bring food to share)
We are also still continuing to run the Charity Table.  This has been hugely successful and has massively offset the costs required to fund both the charity quilts for Sonshine and the QuiltCon Charity Quilt. Bring in anything you have that you won't use that you think someone else might love to take home.  In the past this has included patterns, magazines, notions, fabric (whole, scraps, selvage). This will be the last Charity Table until the fall.

The meeting agenda is:
  • Guild business
  • Advice Night!
  • Block Lotto
  • Show and tell
Please bring:
  • A project you need advice on
  • A quilt or project for show and tell
  • Name tag
  • Your Heritage Park group entry quilt
  • Block lotto entries
  • Charity Table donations
The dues cycle is January-December and they are $60 per person in 2018. Members who join after June will pay $40. First meeting is free for visitors, then $10 for a single meeting (fees could be more for special programming). After that we ask you to support and join our community by purchasing a membership to attend additional meetings and sew days and to participate in other guild activities.

Your membership fee includes membership to the Modern Quilt Guild. One the benefits of an MQG is access to their resources. This includes a new webinar every month. Some of the webinars so far just this year include:

Highlights of our April Meeting and Sew Day

We were lucky enough to be able to reschedule Natalie Gerber from the March Meeting (which was cancelled due to extreme weather) to the April Meeting.  She brought her sketch books and papers where she starts her design process by hand with ink or paint.  She also brought samples of her screen printed fabric and showed us the link between her designs and the final product.

Make sure you go see her at cSPACE King Edward.

Over the last few months we've been working on our Upcycle Challenge and the variety of items that were presented was amazing. We started with everything from curtains and shirts to neon safety vest and hot pink metallic booty shorts. We ended up with everything from mini quilts, bags and pouches to an apron and a stuffed rhino. The big winner was a beautifully pieced fox pillow from an upcycled shirt.

After our March meeting was cancelled we had SO much Show and Tell! One thing that I love about this guild is that everyone gets a chance to show anything at any meeting. Some larger guilds only have a limited amount of time for a lot of members so they do Show and Tell signups or draws or scheduled rotations, and there may be restrictions on the types of projects you can show.  We have the time to love on everyone equally.

The April Sew Day was incredibly busy, we were assembling, quilting, and binding away for most of the weekend.  We fed our slaves volunteers and kept them pretty happy.

We managed to finish an amazing number of quilts but there are still quilts that want to be quilted and bound that the Charity Coordinator Linda will be bringing to the next meeting. Great job everyone! Those quilts will go to women and children who move into the Sonshine Center and many times own precious little besides this quilt.
